If You Can Imagine And Describe Hell, Same Holds True For Vakilabad Prison

Political prisoner Hashem Khastar, head of the Teachers Trade Union in Mashhad has been transferred to a section in Vakilabad prison among high risk and dangerous convicted criminals.

Hashem Khastar was moved to this dangerous section in Vakailabad prison after his letter was published revealing horrific conditions and the secret executions in that prison.

In an interview with ICHRI Mrs. Khastar said, 2 days after her husband was moved from prisoner of conscience section to ward 5 where murderers and criminals are held, she went to the Revolutionary Court to find out the reason for this transfer. She was told by an official there that after Khastar wrote the letter about prison conditions, they moved him to this section so he could see for himself the conditions of other sections in this prison.

Hashem Khastar, an agricultural engineer, retired teacher and the head of Teachers Trade Union in Mashhad was arrested September 16, 2009 while taking a walk at Mellat park in Mashhad.

Khastar was sentenced to 6 years by lower court. Court of Appeals reduced his sentence to 2 years.
He has written 3 letters to Judiciary Chief describing horrific conditions and secret executions in Mashhad Vakilabad prison.

Mrs. Khastar quoting her husband says; “Ward 5 suffers from overcrowding, has 15 beds with 60 prisoners, 8 of them sleep on the floor and the rest sleep in the hallway”. Khastar is among what prisoners call “floor sleepers” and sleeps on the floor.

The ward is very noisy, dirty and smoked filled. There is always a long line for bathroom and shower facilities.

Mrs. Khastar says all she can say is, if you can imagine and describe Hell, the same description can be used for Vakilabad prison.

Mrs. Khastar says, because he doesn’t want to worry us, he always says not to worry, everything is fine but others who have been in this ward before have told me there is always fights and scuffles among prisoners due to overcrowding.

Mrs. Khastar says her husband suffers from poor heath but has not been allowed medical leave. She is very
worried for him.

According to Mrs. Khastar before her husband was imprisoned, he weighed 191 LBS and was healthy but now he weighs 132 LBS and is unhealthy.
