A month after the presidential election, there is still no news from some the people arrested just prior to the election. Meanwhile, reports suggest some of the prisoners are under pressure to give false confessions.
According to the Green Voice of Freedom, Mohsen Rahmani, Akbar Amini, Pezhman Zafarmand and Ahmad Askari are among those arrested days before and after the election.
A number of people were arrested at Hassan Rouhani’s campaign rally at Jamaran. Mohsen Rahmani was among those arrested that night. All were later released on bail except for Mohsen Rahmani, who is incarcerated at Ward 240 of Evin prison and his status is unclear.
Akbar Amini was also arrested a few days before the election by the Intelligence Ministry’s agent. His status also remains unclear.
Although it was expected that, after the presidential election the Intelligence officials might show a more rational behavior, they still refuse to provide any information about the prisoners to their families.
Pezhman Zafarmand and Ahmad Askari were arrested after the presidential election. Pezhman Zafarmand was a campaign activist for Mohamad Reza Aref. After Aref withdrew from the race, Zafarmand went to work for Rouhani’s campaign but was arrested 2 days later. Ahmad Askari was also arrested few days after the election.
All this while, after the election, the jubilant people across the country celebrated on the streets and chanted slogans in support of the detained Green leaders Mir Hossein Mousavi, his wife Zahra Rahnavard and Mehdi Karoubi and asked for their and all political prisoners release.
Amini, Zafarmand, Askari and Rahmani have yet to be permitted to visit with their lawyers or their families.
A number of the people arrested prior to and right after the presidential election were active within a candidate’s campaign framework. Others believed in boycotting the election and had no political activities, thus making the reason for their arrest unclear. They had no affiliation with any political parties or groups inside or outside of the country, and their activities were limited to supporting the rights of the people’s movement.
